Medical degree from the Un of S. Illinois, Ophthalmology Residency at the State University of New York at Brooklyn, Cornea and Refractive Clinical fellowship surgery at Cornell Un / North Shore University Hospital, Surgical Glaucoma Clinical Fellowship as well as Keratoprosthesis training with Claes Dohlman, MD, PhD at the Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. 1996 Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of Residency Training for the State University of New York at Brooklyn, 2001 Associate and in 2010-present Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology NYU Medical School, New York City, NY.
He has presented over 1,000 original paper presentations at the major ophthalmology meetings: AAO, ASCRS, ESCRS and ARVO. He has published over 130 peer-reviewed papers, dozens of book chapters, as well as hundreds of editorials in ophthalmology-related commercial journals. Since 2019, he has been the first surgeon to complete laser cataract procedure and IOL implantation through an incision under 1.6 mm. He has devised, presented, published extensively and trained dozens of international surgeons in the Athens Protocol CXL for keratoconus. 2019 Life Achievement Award by the AAO, 2016 and 2017: President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery, the refractive surgery arm of the AAO.
His continued research interests focus in customization of laser treatments early diagnosis and management of keratoconus, biological factors involved in corneal wound healing.
